Creating a Smart Folder
Smart Folders
are folders that display the results of a search. Entries in a Smart Folder are “virtual” entries they don’t actually exist in the Smart Folder itself. When you select a Smart Folder, you see a list of entries stored in other locations that match the search criteria you’ve provided. Smart Folders automatically update the found list when entries are created, modified, and deleted.
- Choose File > New Smart Folder.
- Use the pop-up menus and text fields to define the search criteria for the folder.
- Click the Add (+) button to expand the search criteria.
To change the search criteria of a Smart Folder, select the Smart Folder and choose the menu item Edit > Edit Smart Folder.
This is the interface you will see when you create and edit smart folders. Most options should be familiar to users of Mail.app, iTunes, or iPhoto.

But there are a few Mori specific tips and tricks that I’ll mention here.
- Rules For some rules you need to enter special values where you would expect to just edit a control or choose from a popup button. For instance for the “Kind” rule the options are:
- “com.apple.rtfd” - matches standard text entries.
- “public.folder” - matches folder entries.
- “com.hogbaysoftware.mori.smartfolder” - matches smart folder entries
- Live updates of search results checkbox option. Check this if you want the search results to update as soon as you make a change to your entries. If this option isn’t checked the smart folder will be updated next time the notebook is saved, or next time you select the smart folder.
- Performance If you have a really big notebook (thousands of entries) smart folder searches can start to run slowly. You will notice this when you select the smart folder and the interface takes a moment to update. To make them run faster try to include the most limiting rules first… those rules that will eliminate the most entries. Also if you are searching for text the “Contains” option is relatively slow, so if you can avoid that option it should make the search run faster. Also if you uncheck “Sort results by” and check “Limit to” your searches will run faster.
To find an entry’s original location in your notebook select the entry and choose the menu item View > Reveal Location.
