Easy keyboard creation of entries and editing of titles mutually exclusive

Project:Mori
Version:1.6.8
Component:User interface
Category:feature
Priority:normal
Assigned:Unassigned
Status:active

Description

In HBN pressing return in the entries view creates a new entry (unless disabled), regardless of whether you're currently editing a title or not. Pressing enter will start or end editing a title.

In Mori pressing return will start or end editing a title unless it is set to create new entries (preference), in which case there is no way to start editing a title without using the mouse.

Pressing enter always transfers focus to the note view. The HBN ctrl+tab way now gets you to the search field. Personally I only use the mouse for those two things, but other people may appreciate this new behaviour. In any case I think the fact that the Mac has both return and enter keys is not fully utilized in Mori.

Workaround: uncheck preference, use return to edit titles and cmd+n (less intuitive) for new entries.

BTW when hitting preview on a new issue the title field is cleared :-(

Correction: pressing enter does NOT always transfer focus to the note view but first end any active title editing.

This is actually inferior to HBN where you could press enter to change a title, then ctrl-tab to adjust the note accordingly. Now it's (with preference unchecked) return, enter, enter. Not consistent.

These shortcut keys are certainly a balancing act :)

Here's two things that might help. First (when in the sources or entries view) you can always hit 'e' to begin editing a title, that behavior is copied from OmniOutliner. Also you can always hit Cmd-' to toggle focus between the sources/entries view and the note text view.

The HBN approach had other problem (which at the moment escape me), but in general getting these keys all sorted out is pretty tricky. I hope those two extra shortcuts will help you find a good working combination. For now I'm going to mark this issue as 'won't change' since all changes seem to create there own inconsistencies, but if you have any specific tweaks in mind please add a comment.

"e" might help. Cmd+' is not very useful as it's three keys (including shift) on a German layout.

Note that you can map a different shortcut key to the menu item "Edit Note" from the OS X keyboard system preferences.

I attached a comparasion of keyboard equivalents. Note that Omni Outliner is the only program offering full functionality with single key strokes while Mori is the only one needing a three key combination.

Also Mori uses Esc in a rather destructive way that might better be abandoned in favor of Undo, especially since it makes Omni users suffer.

Things get worse with the new wireless keyboard, where Enter is a two key combination (Fn+Return).

Personally I think that Mori is the least intuitive, but YMMV.
