Del.icio.us style tags

Description

The current tagging support uses a GMail style interface. Tags are folders. This is easy to understand bug makes tags a limited resources, any more then 10-15 tags and all the sources entry view will fill up. Del.icio.us tags are just a list of words that you click on to tag an entry. These tags don't need to be part of the sources view, they can instead be displayed as a big paragraph of words somewhere else in the interface. This provides two benefits, you can have more of them, and you don't need to drag and drop to add a tag, you can just click on it.

Two possible places to put these tags. In the info drawer. This way you can ignore them if you like. Or in the text view, this would make them a much more central part of the UI. Note, use cool new Mail.app style tokens for displaying tags in either case.

This sounds like a great feature, and could make Mori unique among its competitors. Hopefully this makes it in soon.

As I'm on a 12" PB, I would vote against having an additional info drawer, but perhaps that is unavoidable. Instead maybe a resizable pane at the bottom left, where you can view your tags as either a cloud or a list. Or if you need more room, the entire left pane could toggle between a tag view and the normal folder view. If you do go with a drawer, at least try to make it so you can close it and have your window readjust its size (for example, in Preview if you're viewing a pdf full screen, then open the drawer and close it again, it doesn't go back to full screen).

This is an interesting tagging interface. Might work well when adding tags to Mori

That's pretty cool, Jesse.

As far as tagging goes, Mori already has some support for tagging. Rather than using folders, create a custom column (call it Tags) and simply type your tags into there. For example, in the Tags column in a notebook I might type "home computer coffee". I can then easily filter for similarly tagged entries using the Smart Folder interface (at least, now; I realize that when this post was originally written that wasn't possible). All that's really lacking is a better interface for sorting entries by tags (maybe like the one Jesse linked to) and identifying tags as you type them (to let you know if you're creating a new tag or not).

The three best tagging interfaces I've used:
http://www.johnvey.com/features/deliciousdirector/
http://www.piknow.com/Site/about%20pik.html
http://www.happyapps.com/webnotehappy/

The most efficient entry systems are those that allow for fast entry of multiple tags, using autocomplete and/or showing existing tags nearby for inclusion by clicking. For viewing, columns are boring but they allow for stringing together sets of tags - good for multi-inclusion.

Interesting links, seafoamgreen, I've never seen those apps before. Mori could definitely take advantage of the tagging fever.
