It's 1.6.11 and all's well

Mori 1.6.11 has now run for about a week in my home folder, and I have had no real problems (earlier report).

Had one hair-raiser on day 3. Started Mori right after login, and it opened with only about 1/5 of all toolbar widgets visible. As mouse and menu were functional I started clicking around. Widgets started appearing, and after about a minute and a half they were all there. This happened just once; later I realised that the login process might still have been going when I opened Mori.

Alfonso, it looks like you now have its, erm, 'bowel movements' under control.
Now looking forward to see Mori 1.7 - any time soon?

Soon and Very Soon

I'm glad to hear 1.6.11 has been working okay for you. The toolbar issue is definitely odd, and I'll look into that, but thank you for reporting success with the latest version.

Yes! Unless the user community decides otherwise, I'll be reporting the 1.7 beta release shortly!

Problem with long delays

I have a problem with Mori that is driving me crazy.

Often, it just wanders off and won't respond for minutes at a time. I use Mori in part to save various interesting articles I see on the net. I admit to having large numbers of entries (in the thousands) which I am sure is a big part of the problem.

My guess is that the databases you test against may not have these sizes.

At any rate, if I create a new item, title it and then paste first a link and then the content of the web page I'm interested in, this might go reasonably fast. But if, heaven forfend, I try to edit out the ads from the article, Mori regularly locks up for at least a minute before it will let me do anything.

Then when I try to add another item, it locks up again.

Frequently when I use it to take notes in a meeting, it will go off and do something else and I'm left unable to use it.

I know that what I want Mori to do is difficult and maybe the performance I want is not possible. But it would be nice to at least know what the limiting factors are. Maybe I could keep only a current notebook and periodically back up entries into an archival one.

Can you give me any insight into what's happening?

Mark

Can you move this to a bug report?

Let's move this discussion to a bug report, please. I'd like to track the causes down, and let others experiencing a similar problem also add their two cents. Thank you.

Short answer: unless you have more than 100,000 entries, you shouldn't experience delays in Mori.

To help narrow down the possibilities:

Does adding a new entry after starting Mori cause it to be momentarily unresponsive?
Are there any notices from Mori posted on Console? Are there particular notebooks in which this behavior is more noticeable?
After adding a web clipping to Mori that causes it to be unresponsive, see if Mori again exhibits this behavior when you: close all your open notebooks, restart Mori, create a new notebook (it should prompt you to do so by default when there are no open notebooks), and add the web clipping to the new notebook.

Can you move this to a bug report?

Does adding a new entry after starting Mori cause it to be momentarily unresponsive?

Not usually. I think it depends on what I just did. My general feeling is that Mori has a hard time moving in and out of edit mode. I can enter several web clippings in a row with no trouble. But if I try to edit out some advertising, that brings it to a halt.

Are there any notices from Mori posted on Console? Are there particular notebooks in which this behavior is more noticeable?

No and No.

After adding a web clipping to Mori that causes it to be unresponsive, see if Mori again exhibits this behavior when you: close all your open notebooks, restart Mori, create a new notebook (it should prompt you to do so by default when there are no open notebooks), and add the web clipping to the new notebook.

Generally this is not where the problem is. I did create a new notebook and moved just my web clippings into it. This didn't fix the problem.

Still having serious slowdowns

Alphonso,

I created a bug report on this item some time ago. Since I haven't gotten any feedback or questions, I'm wondering if I succeeded?

Is there anything else I can do to help diagnose this problem? It's really driving me crazy.

Mark

I having the same problem

I've got about 4400 entries. It seems to happen when creating new entries. I've repaired my notebook.

Unresponsiveness on 4400 entries

Bob,

I see the system reported problems trying to load Mori's Spotlight importer, as well as other issues with Mori's setup on your system. These symptoms indicate deeper problems with Mori's executable and its environment.

Please remove all plugins from Mori's application support folder, move all versions of Mori currently on your hard drive to the trash and empty the trash (or at least store any into archives if you want to keep an older version around, then erase the originals from your hard drive) and reboot your Mac or re-log into your account, then we can get a clearer picture of where Mori is actually encountering problems on your system.

Thank you for your help on fixing this problem.

Alfonso
P.S. In the future, please report issues in the bug reporter so we all have a good idea of the current quality of Mori's code.

I've narrowed down the cause

I've narrowed down the cause of the two following entries to Smart Scroll:

I've contacted the developer and given him Alfonso's e-dress. Hope they can work this out. But this is not the cause of the slow down which started within the last several weeks. These console entries have been around awhile and I've reported them months ago.

Plugin Loading Error in Mori

These are indeed warnings caused by Mori (actually, in the Blocks plugin framework) due to changes I made a few revisions ago to simplify plugin loading. While they do seem alarming, there is no adverse affect that they represent.

They will be gone in Mori 1.7.

Version 1.6.10 seems to have the same issue with the spinning beach ball of death. But it also has a problem with emptying the trash. Giving 1.6.11 another try

Bob

There Were Reasons for 1.6.11's Release

Version 1.6.11 fixes definitely broken behavior in 1.6.10.

The prolonged delay in Mori's responsiveness was attributed to some odd interaction between plugins, I believe. I don't see how it could happen in Mori alone, but if you're still experiencing it I believe you. I just need to get the cause nailed down to be able to correct it.

The unrespected default font setting on new entries is annoying, I know. (I'm sure I had commented on it before in the forum, but I haven't been able to locate it yet.) It has been that way for quite a while in the 1.6 branch, but will be fixed in 1.7. For now, the workaround is to select all in the new entries and select menu item "Text > Clear Formatting".

Expanding entries in the Entries View is not possible

The entries listed in the Entries View don't have an expansion widget.

Entries View - View setting in Toolbar

Hey Bob,

Is it possible this is due to the setting of the View control in the toolbar? Make sure it's in Outline mode.

Also, try it without any additional plugins.

Alfonso
P.S. In the future, please report issues in the bug reporter so we all have a good idea of the current quality of Mori's code.

Yep it was the view control.

Yep it was the view control. Don't remember setting it, but that fixed it.

Thanks
