Main navigation bar + general notes

I think that the entries in the navigation bar at the top are somewhat misleading and difficult to understand for new visitors ("Why Books?? I thought they sell software?").

It might be more logical to have something like this:

Home / Products / Documents / Forums / About

or:
Home / Projects / Documents / Participate / Company

("Participate" would lead to: Forums / Submit Bug / Submit Feature Request / Submit Code / Manage Account)

I understand that the structure and content of this site is still very much in flux, but I think you should make it more inviting and user-friendly. The site is difficult to browse, and it has a very spartan, wiki-like, provisionary look and feel.
I'll try to post more detailed suggestions later ...

I agree! These are good

I agree! These are good ideas!

And the first thing you see

And the first thing you see in big letters is "The power to change." That's gotta go. I just want to make some outlines!

I think someone else made this point, the open development process is great but should not be the main attraction.

"The Power to Change", that's Hog Bay Software's new mantra (as seen in Art of the Start)

My marketing expertise (i read a few books last winter) emphasizes above all else differentiation. And the big difference between Hog Bay Software and the many other shareware companies is this big "Power to Change" process that I've set up. So in my mind it's really important to get this message out.

Here's some logic behind the idea. For many people Hog Bay Notebook was a standout application in the notebook/outliner category. But so far I've only been making a little over $10,000 a year on it. That's not very feasible long term for a full time job. The reason for this I think is that with Hog Bay Notebook I was a single developer doing everything. It could do a lot of things much better then any other application, but it was missing fairly standard features that people wanted, but that I would never have time to implement. The other reason was that I didn't do any marketing except press releases and posting to download sites. One way to remedy this would be to spend half my time marketing (as the books recommend) and to work on all the detail features before working on interesting new ideas. But that doesn't sound like very much fun to me.

But if I can get "The Power to Change" process working I think it will greatly strengthen both of these weaknesses. Having more then one developer work on the code should really help polish things and make Mori feature competitive with other application across the line, instead of just specific uses. I also think that allowing people to participate in the development process will help out with marketing. My bet is that if someone helps design/build a new feature they will be much more likely to tell their friends about the app. And that's the kind of marketing that I need because I'm never going to have the time/design to run marketing campaigns of my own.

So it's not just the big point of differentiation, I also think that it's the key to making Hog Bay Software a success. So it's a priority for me to let everyone know about it.

But... i guess... it also means that I must listen to everyone's comments about the website :) So what do people think. Is the power to change message on the front page to in your face. Any ideas on how to tone it down, while still letting people know that it's the key thing the Hog Bay Software provides?

Jan, thanks for these

Jan, thanks for these comments. I’m looking forward to your more detailed suggestions. I agree there is a lot of room for improvement.

Update

I’ve removed the “Logged on users” section for starters. Does that help? I know you are thinking of many more changes, but I just want to make sure that I’m starting off in the right direction.
