view folders only in sources view

Project:Mori
Version:1.1.2
Component:User interface
Category:feature
Priority:normal
Assigned:Unassigned
Status:active

Description

In the sources view, there should be an option to make like it was in HBN, where you can only see folders instead of files. Now if I click a folder that has a lot of files as well as other folders in it, I've got to scroll down to see the rest of my folders.

Whereas before, it is useful to be able to have access to all of my folders without all of the files getting in the way. Hopefully that makes sense.

Strongly disagree. I love the ability to view more than folders in the left pane. Since we have no "hoist" function, this is the only way. Plus, it is fast and clear. The ability to see everything in the left pane encouraged me to really invest serious time in Mori (way back before it was a public beta).

If it were possible to give this zero or negative stars, you bet I would.

Strongly disagree.

I wouldn't add this feature at the expense of the current behavior, it would be an option.

I agree strongly with this recommendation. There are two reasons:

Mixing files and folders in the left pane is fine as long as there are only a few items, but it quickly becomes unwieldy. If you have a folder with 10 subfolders plus 400 files, disclosing the folder in the left hand pane makes the pane virtually useless.

The new file button now has inconsistent behaviour. If the folder that is selected in the left hand pane has the disclosure triangle closed, the new file will be put into the left pane at the top level. If the disclosure triangle is open, the new file will be put into the selected folder. This is just plain wrong.

There is no obvious way to put a file into a specified folder. You cannot open the disclosure triangle in the left hand pane because that puts 400+ items into the left pane and makes it useless. The way to make it work is to select the folder in the left hand pane and then select an arbitrary item from the top pane before hitting the new file button. Definitely unintuitive.

I can see the utility of putting some files at the top level and having them visible at this top level in the left hand pane, but this should be implemented differently. The ability to have files at the top level and visible in the left pane does not imply that all files within folders should be visible in the left pane.

Title:view folders only in source view» source view with two (hierarchical) panes - instead of just one
Version:»

The best would be if the left pane would be not one but two panes. Like column view in Finder. Then on top left you'd have an advance and back button to move to even finer/deeper corners of your hierarchy.

Until you end up with only files/notes in the second of the two left vertical panes. This means there should be an alternative of (a) having the last level of notes up (current horizontal design) or (b) additional in a second vertical pane at left.

Additional benefit: you'd see more of your note :)

I think it's a waste of space to see the list of notes horizontally on top - who needs such a long horizontal line to describe the note? Title, rating, modification date, creation date... oh well.

There is NO note pad around (I've tried them all) who offers that dual-vertical-left-pane design. Mori shoud offer it.

You can change the title on these things? I'm trying to change it back, this should be a pretty simple option to add, then we can worry about adding panes.

Now I understand why terceiro mentioned that this was like having a hoist function. Since we no longer have a bookmark pane, you can drag a file to the sources view for easy access. I tried using a smart folder with checkboxes as a bookmarking device, but that doesn't work as well.

Perhaps there's a way you can combine the two, but I'm not sure exactly how. Right now I have a bunch of folders in the sources view, and I'd prefer not to scroll through the files when navigating them. But I also dragged over a few files for easy access.

This is an essential feature to improve Mori's clarity of presentation. Otherwise, the Sources and Entries view are serving almost the same function. This would be a great option.

I'd like to see this feature. I never used Hog Bay Notebook, but the idea still occured to me it would be nice to see folders only in the sources view to reduce clutter. It should probably be changeable via a preference setting, so people who don't like it don't have to use it.
