Creating and using links

You can create links between entries in your notebook, or from entries in your notebook to email addresses, pages on the web, and more.

To create a link between entries:

  1. Select some text in the text view where the link will be created.
  2. Choose Text > Make Link To and then select the destination entry.
  3. Or choose Text > Make Link To > New Entry to create a new child entry and link to it.

To create a link to a file on your computer:

  1. Select some text in the text view where the link will be created.
  2. Choose Text > Make Link To > File…
  3. In the file sheet choose the file that you wish to link to.

To create a link to a URL on the web:

  1. Make sure that “Show URLs as clickable links” is checked in the “Text Editing” preferences and then just type a URL or email address in the note text view.

Or

  1. Select some text in the text view where the link will be created.
  2. Choose Text > Make Link… to open the link editor sheet.
  3. In the link editor sheet enter the full URL to link to. For example to create a link to Hog Bay Software enter ‘http://www.hogbaysoftware.com’.

This screenshot shows me creating a link from text in the note text view to another entry in the notebook. In this screen shot I’m using the note text views popup menu to create the link. I could also use the main menu item Text > Make Link To.

Browsing to establish links

It would be useful if a file system browser could be invoked to enable links to files etc. to be established more easily.

Address Book Entries

It would also be nice to be able to drag Address Book entries in, linking an address with a note. (Although maybe there is a way - I'm a newbie with this software after all. I think I like it!)

Currently I can duplicate this functionality by dragging the proper file from ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook/MetaData/ , into the Make A Link dialog box, and prefixing the path with file://. I kinda hope there's a better way to do this, but this method works for me.

email address book entries

I am new to Mori and still learning the basics - I am not sure whether it is the done thing or ethical even to make use of someone else's software - but email Links are very easy to establish in VoodooPad Lite.

Having done that, it is simple to drag them across into Mori

Same with URLs - I have not tried this approach with Links to files on my computer [which Voodoo also manages]

Surprising what a little experimentation will do

Easy URL Link Generation

Often you just c&p a link into a document. Afterwards you have to mark the whole word hit cmd+shift+l and c&p the link again. I think this is not optimal.
Why not:
* when cmd+shift+l is called the currently highlighted text (most of the time an url) is automatically inserted into the link text field so the you just hit enter if you don't want to mask the url, but still highlighted so you can type it away if you want
* when no text is highlighted you should still be able to invoke cmd+shift+l and (if the cursor is surrounded by text: use the sourrounding text to fill the link dialog automatically) paste in an url in the link dialog and when pushing ok the url is pasted into the document with the url as the link text

So an example workflow would be: c&p a link, hit cmd+shift+l, (to the left of the cursor is text (the url), the text is automatically in the link field so all you have to do is) hit Ok, done.

Good idea! You might add it

Good idea! You might add it (and your vote) to this request for "auto recognize wiki, email and url links"

Make links via smart folders

Smart folders show up in the Make Link To pop-up menu but not their content. Both smart folders and making links are very useful features and I would like to use them together.
