Filtering on Column Contents

Description

I'm a product developer, and have scores of projects going at any time. Each project has a few critical status items: category of project (toy, appliance, vehicle, etc.), its development status (idea, active, done, etc.), its licensing status (licensed, out for review, available, etc.), which employee is responsible for the project, etc. etc.

I need to be able to quickly filter entries on column content, so I can see for example, only dolls that are available for licensing, or only vehicle ideas, or only projects in active development that "Bill" is working on. Mori's smart folders don't help me here because they can't search on custom column content. Even if that did work I'm not sure it'd be an optimal solution.

I can't believe that this is an unusual scenario, and can't understand why no current outliners support it! For many years I've used In Control by Attain, mostly because of its wonderful column filtering capabilities, but it's long orphaned, Classic-only, and doesn't support aliases or multimedia entries. Filtering rows by column data in In Control is as simple as selecting a cell and clicking the "match cell =" button. Instantly, only those rows containing matching data in the corresponding column are shown. Filtering on multiple criteria is a matter of doing successive matches, for example, filter first on Licensing Status = "Licensed", then on Licensor = "ABC Inc." to see everything I've licensed to that company.

A related feature, customizeable pop-up and autotyper data entry helpers, is also provided by In Control and not only saves typing time, but insures consistent spelling of status column data so that filtering works properly.

There are a couple of ways I'm tackling this problem.

First smart folders allow you to setup dynamic queries on entry attributes. Currently custom attributes are not yet supported, but this is planned for the future.

Second delicious style tags are also planned. These will be built on-top of smart folders, but will provide an interface that makes it easy to tag something and quickly see all entries that are tagged with a certain term.

Last of all string attributes are added to the text search index, and so you can search for them using the toolbar search field.

I think these various other feature requests should satisfy the features that you mention, so I'm going to mark this request as a duplicate. If that's not the case please let me know how this request differs and I'll make it active again.

It sounds like the Delicious tags might be a great addition. I'm a bit concerned about the dependency on Smart Folders, since my filter criteria is so changeable; I don't want to clutter up my outline with a zillion smart folders, one for every filter I ever do. Each time I want to filter on new criteria I'll have to create a smart folder, do a search, then (probably) delete the smart folder. Much less elegant than simply clicking on the "match cell" button in InControl, then clicking once more on the "view all" button to un-filter.

Mori's existing "sort" feature on columns could be a workaround to actual filtering, especially if multiple sorts were allowed, i.e. sort on column 1 then subsort on column 2, etc.
